Spring Wilderness Quest

May 7, 2022 - May 15, 2022
$1775

This nine-day Wilderness Quest will be held in the Inyo Mountains, a remote high desert range that translates as “dwelling place of the Great Spirit.”  This is a drive-in base camp, requiring a high clearance vehicle, preferably 4 wheel drive.

Rites of Passage has offered the Wilderness Quest, with its roots in pan-cultural ceremonies and teachings of the vision quest or vision fast, for over 40 years. With a focus on reconnecting with nature, finding authentic depth and meaning, healing old wounds, and  marking significant life changes, the program will appeal to men and women in any life stage.  The first 3 days are Severance or preparation time for the solo.  Meeting in Council sessions, the group will explore a range of subjects related to the Wilderness Quest solo, including safety-related issues: flora/fauna, weather-related concerns (heat, cold, lightning), essential first aid, our buddy system, and tarp-tying.  The group will also explore eco-spiritual tools that can be of great value in preparing, such as the Medicine Wheel teachings, exploration of Intent and purpose, self-generated ceremonial practices, and teachings from the Death Lodge. Group members will have several hours to follow their calling to find a solo site to hold them in the wilderness for days and nights.  The final 3 days, following the return from the solo, will be devoted to taking the necessary steps of return or Incorporation in a fully conscious way. This process begins with a Council session where each participant has the opportunity to tell the story of their Wilderness Quest solo and to receive essential feedback and confirmation from staff regarding what has been achieved.

Schedule

There will be two pre-trip online meetings before the start of the program.  The group will gather at a campground on Saturday, May 7 at 1:00 pm at a campground near the town of Big Pine, California.  After one night there, the program will move to the Inyo Mountains base camp.  After the solo, there will be one last night at a campground before the program ends by noon on Sunday, May 15.

We’ll also hold a  reunion council online about a month after returning from the mountains.

Please read The Rites of Passage Wilderness Quest for a detailed description of the elements and stages of the journey.

Staff

Mike Bodkin, the Executive Director of Rites of Passage, has guided people into nature for personal and spiritual development for over 35 years.

Susan Wofsy became a Wilderness Quest guide after working in rural Africa and Latin America for over a decade and seeing the profoundly empowering effects of living intimately with land and nature.

Deeply healing and transformative. I found another family in the people, the animals, the wind, the stones and the sage bushes. I felt completely held as I went through the difficult process of birthing a new self. Thank you Rites of Passage. – Hallie M.

I would recommend this program to anyone in a transition, looking for a new path or a shift in perspective. It’s a re-birth of self, a homecoming to nature, and a reconnection to spirit. I came home to myself in such a beautiful way. I dumped the should’s and the norms. My spirit can soar again. I have reclaimed my power and my joy. – Jaime S.
